How To Get Motivated

Out of all the emails I get asking about my about advice on health, recipes and other stuff. The most common question I get  is "how to get motivated to make healthy choices?".

Well, we as humans are naturally motivated by two factors. We want to avoid/get out of any negative outcomes or move towards the idea of a positive outcome (future). Hoping which ever one you choose is big enough to make you move closer to your goals to get there...

But how do you tap into to your own power to bring out out that motivation?

How To Get Motivated To Be Healthy: Tapping Into Your Own Power

First you must identify your WHY...

Why are you wanting to become healthy/fit and make healthy choices? (say it out loud or write it down)

Whatever you make your WHY it should be such a powerful thought that you either want to get up and run towards it or run away from it!

Now let me get back to the negative and positive factors I was talking about...

Some of you might not be happy with the way your body looks right now. You might feel ashamed of wearing certain clothes because the way it fits...

Some of you might not like the fact that you are constantly feeling drained. Lacking energy to do much of anything except the mundane daily things you need to do to get by...

Some of you might  also have so many health challenges that you just don't even know where to begin to start getting better. (if you are just starting out you should read this post here)

Well whatever that negative feeling is you need to make that an uncomfortable object that makes you want to get as far away from it as you can.

With each day you make a healthy choice to eat clean or do some exercise is one step further you are taking from your current situation that is making you unhappy and one step closer to looking and feeling vibrant and healthy .

Some days you'll make huge leaps forward and some day you might stumble or just make baby steps. But as long as you keep your back turned on old habits and keep making some healthy choices daily it means your are getting closer to making healthy living a lifestyle for yourself...

One of my teachers use to say (something like this) that if you resist acting on a negative desire now, in the end your reward will be much greater... It's like that negative impulsing is blocking all this positive light your about to receive...

To give you an example of a negative motivator I used in my life. This negative factor was actually what made me get into to studying health and nutrition and become an health practitioner. That negative factor was cancer.

When I was 19 I witnessed a close family friend who had taken me in to their home like family battle with stage 4 cancer. During just 6 months I saw this beautiful kind and loving woman that had such a magnetic personality just wither away...

Within those months it looked like she aged 30 years. I remember literally seeing life just leave her daily. Until one day she couldn't put up a fight any longer and so she passed away. I know that that last year she went thru a lot of pain and so did her family...

Well this left a pretty big mark on me. And because of it I began to studying as much as I could on human biology, nutrition and other health aspects...

And I swore to myself (and her) that if I ever encounter someone  battling with their health that next time I will have the knowledge and tools to help them out...

And this negative factor is what's kept me motivated 16 years later to continue helping people with their health, and since then many positives factors have sprouted that I now use too for motivation...

Now for the other people who like to focus more on the positive factors as motivation. You also need to be very clear on your WHY. You need to write that out on a paper put it up somewhere you can see it everyday.

Now some of you might have a picture or memory of yourself when you were thinner/in shape or just felt healthier. If you do I recommend you also put that up some where next to your why statement.

If you don't have such image or memory maybe look for a pic of someone's body that wish to use for inspiration. For example last year to motivate myself to get up early and do cardio this is what I did...

I would set my alarm on my phone to wake me up, then right after that I would scroll through instagram (at that time I purposely followed a lot of fitness competitors). So when I scrolled thru I would just see people that were ripped...

I would usually curse under my breath and jump right out of bed and head to the gym. (btw I am not a morning person at all) My girlfriend was extremely surprised by this new morning ritual I was starting.

With just on month of doing this it made a huge difference in my physique and energy levels for the rest of the day.

So find your WHY. Make sure your why is either so uncomfortable that it makes you just step away from that chocolate cake or your why is so inspirational that you can't wait to make daily progress to reach your goals.

And most of all be inspired and motivated but also be patient with your self. If you are not happy with where you are right now remember that you weren't always feeling that way. And just how it took time to get where you are today it will also take time to get out of there.

Look on the bright side every day is a new day and a new chance to start again. So if you ever feel like you didn't make the best choices today, wake up tomorrow and start fresh.  And know that the more consistent you are with your healthy habits the easier they will become one day.

And trust me one day you'll wake up excited to work out and gulp down that green drink and you'll think it's delicious.

Cheers to your health!
